These practical workshops will give you an introduction to what public relations actually is and what it can do for you, your organisation and its products and services. The workshops will help you write press releases that journalists will want and look at ways to make sure your releases make it onto the page or screen.
Course Overview
Demystifying PR
Three practical workshops that will show you the potential of PR and how you can make full use of its range of activities. At the end of the sessions you will understand how to write newsworthy press releases and convince journalists that they need to use them.
Session 1 Introduction to Public Relations
10 – 11:30 am
This session will define public relations and explain its value. We will look at different disciplines and when to use them, from media relations to public affairs. We will consider crisis communications and social media and how they fit into your PR plan. And we’ll look at different PR writing skills.
Session 2 Writing a press release
1 – 2:30 pm
Top tips for writing press releases that get used. You will learn how to write an introduction like a journalist: concise, complete and compelling. We will look at how to structure a release and learn what a journalist wants from your press release.
Session 3 Selling in the Story
3:30 – 5:00 pm
Learn what journalists want from PR people and what kind of information will help you get the best out of your media relations. We’ll look at ways to sell in a story, when to phone a journalist and tips for what to say.
Course Content
1. Introduction to Public Relations
This course is aimed at people new to public relations who want to learn more. It will equip them with a foundation in practical PR and introduce them to the writing and media relationship skills they will need in new PR roles.
We will cover:
- What is public relations?
- What are the different types of PR?
- Audiences and how to reach them.
2. Writing a press release
Media relations is a key part of PR and although the media landscape has changed, there is still a need for effective press releases. This session will take you through the steps to writing a press release that journalists will want to use.
We will cover:
- The importance of the introduction
- Telling your story.
- Writing good headline
3. Selling in the Story
So you have a well written press release. Now what do you do with it? This session will look at meeting journalists’ needs while getting your message across.
We will cover:
- Targeting and relevance
- Timing
- Calling the media
